Hi there!

I am looking to buy a BMW 5 series touring (1997 to 2001), and have some
questions I hope you can help me with.

What engine should I go for? I have a couple of 528's (193 hp) that I'm
interested in. Or is it too thirsty? Better to go for the 520 iA (150 hp),
or is it too lazy? How much more fuel ( if any), does the 528 use?

Thanks,

Martini J

Since getting my '03, 530, I can't imagine an E39 with a smaller engine.

I get a constant 22mpg average during the week with mixed city/hwy driving.
On the road the onboard computer gave me 39mpg at about 75mph over 20 miles
or so.

... which is odd, really, seeing as the 530i has the biggest six-pot
motor you can buy in a 5er :).

I think, all things considered...steering, balance, performance (other than
straight line), fuel efficiency, wieght etc...the E39 530 is the best of the
non- E39 models offered.

Having owned two 5 series (a '77 E12 530i M20 4spd and a '91 E34 525i 5 spd)
and a couple of smaller 3-series, I absolutely agree with the general
consensus
that a) the 5 series is the best BMW, and b) the bigger 6-cylinder models
are the best of those.

Now, if I could only get used to the E60 styling... :-(

Sorry, I meant non-M E39 models offered.

That's the problem; one gets spoiled...

I drive a different brand but got hooked on same sort of thing.  After years
of 2 litres and 2.3 litres I acquired a 3.2 l car.  I still have a 2-l, but
it would be hard to give the bigger engine up completely...

My 528 gets about 25 mpg mostly city driving.  It is not fast, but not too
bad once your rolling.

I can't remember when the 530i model first came on the market (probably
2001) but IMO it is a lot better in fuel economy and power than the
528i... especially if you get the AUTO gearbox.  The BMW specs for the
530i were astounding compared to the 528i.  The 1997 528i AUTO only
musters 9.05 L/100 highway but the 530i AUTO can do 7.9 L/100 highway
and yet will put out 231 HP.  It is a vastly superior motor.

The 528i AUTO was also considered disappointing by many.  I also
suspect a touring model could use extra power.  I think an 520iT may be
a lot worse - and with an AUTO tranny...  You'd be much better off with
a diesel and the AUTO tranny.  My choice would be the 2001 530iT -
you'd also get the Angel-eyes headlights.  The old lights were OK but
very tired-looking now even when buffed up.  The newer ones make the
car look much less dated.

My 530i is from '94.

He's referring the M54 I6 that replaced the 2.8 liter engine in 2001.

The E39 530i first came out in 2001. If you're thinking on getting an E60,
wait. Sometime next year, BMW will be coming out with a new six cylinder
engine which may be a 3.5 liter.
Jimmy G - 13 Dec 2004 02:26 GMT
Still a 3.0, but more horsies

I would have never known from reading the message.
Michael Low - 14 Dec 2004 02:32 GMT
You probably didn't read the original message properly.  Martini wrote
"...looking to buy a BMW 5 series touring (1997 to 2001)".  That
immediately means he is looking for an E39.
Your '94 530i is an E34 model.  BMW ended E34 production in 1996.
Jimmy G - 12 Dec 2004 15:41 GMT
That's an interesting phenomenon.

The new E-60 530 has better mpg as well, due mostly to the 6-speed tranny,
though.

The E-60 545 has similar mpg ratings as my 530!  Now, If I could just come
up with an extra $35k...

I own a 530dA (193 hp) - it is very recommendable. It runs 120 km/h @ around
2000 rpm - very smooth on the highway. In addition I get around 7,1 liters
per 100 km, which is nice especially because diesel is also cheaper than
petrol where I am (Denmark).

Interesting, I am in Colorado, my truck is diesel and I am now paying more
for diesel fuel for my pickup than I do premium petrol for my 545. Almost $
00.20 per gallon more.
