I am seriously considering purchasing a 1998 (S) Z3 2.8  in the next few
days and have found one that might be suitable.

Please can you advise me of anything on this car that I should check before
I lay out my hard-earned cash.

Thank You.

Hi John

There are many BMW Z Sites on the net. See the http://www.cinzroadsters.com/
links page for a bunch of links to other Z sites.

John,

Here are a few good places to start your research:
http://www.mz3.net/
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/z3.html
http://www.zscca.org/

They are pretty simple cars, really (I have a '97).  The problems that they
run into are generally the same ones any E36 (325, 323, 328) have.  The only
major weakness they exhibit is in longevity of the cooling system
components.  The radiators, thermostat housings and waterpumps each have
plastic parts in them that become damaged through heat cycling and age and
end up failing.  Luckily, there are aftermarket parts available that replace
the plastic parts with aluminum.  The only hazard in buying a used one is a)
knowing whether or not the prior owner has overheated the engine previously
and b) having to replace these parts for piece of mind.

Otherwise, just be wary of all the regular things.  Good luck with your
purchase.
