Lately my 540i Six Speed has been stalling both at idle and while in top
gear on the highway!  I manage to restart but it runs very rough then
smooths out but will eventuall need a restart soon thereafter.  Sounds like
it's got Microsoft Windows inside!

Dealer said check engine code reveals a Cam Shaft Sensor code??  They told
me to change the plugs and fuel filter which I did but that did not help

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Yup.

They were pulling your plonker.

Did the dealer say why they did not check the cam shaft sensor?  They
do go bad and would likely cause the symptoms you mentioned.

Especially when the Cam Shaft Sensor stands up in a crowd and says, it hurts
right here.

My 98 740iL (same engine) had this code and problem.  Changing the sensor
took me about 30 minutes and about $70 from www.autohausaz.com for the part.
Problem solved.

If you are getting a Cam Shaft Sensor Code, I would advise you to replace
the Cam Shaft Sensor.

The engine management computer uses the Cam Shaft Sensor to keep track of
where the engine is. If the sensor is not working, the computer will not
know when to inject more gas, or when to fire the spark plugs. The result
is, the engine will shut down.

I had the same kind of trouble on my 535i. They changed the camshaft sensor
and that solved the problem perfectly.
