Boy, either your current ride is in "bad shape" or you're a real
keener.  There is a photo gallery on this website:

http://www.wheels24.co.za/Wheels24/News/0,,1369-1372_1653184,00.html

and larger pics at this one:

http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cfm/newsid/2050127.007/bmw/1.html

IMO, it does look a bit better but I would prefer the Star Spoke 95
wheels over the ones they chose to photograph and jet black exterior
probably works better than silver.  I am guessing they were trying to
engineer a softer "retro" look in these photos.

These photos were also published in the recent issue of auto motor
sport, which I found in my letterbox yesterday. They also mentioned a
sports-shadowline version with slightly lowered body and less chrome
parts. I bet that these pics are official BMW press release shots

BTW: According to ams, BMW sold 140.000 units of the E65 in 38 months,
which make it the most successful 7' series ever.

automobear.com reports that the 7 series is the most profitable model, by
unit, that BMW sells and that the car contributes 20 to 25% of BMW's bottom
line. It's no wonder they didn't change the car much at all, or shy away
from their design direction.

All of the original, controversial, styling cues in the initial release are
still present in the car. When I look at the pictures I see very very little
change in the bodywork. They did some light treatments, but not much more
than that.

I find it curious that people are saying they have toned it down or
retreated from the original concept and design.

Simply put, they see what you cannot.

There are all kinds of discordant notes in the original E65 that are gone or
seriously muted. So, I can't believe you think the changes are so subtle.
They're not. From any angle...

But still it is nothing more than a major facelift, which is totally
common after a lifespan of 3 and a half years, given the fact that most
competitors have presented new models or will so so in the near future.

It also seems to be usual, that a car maker varies the debut dates of
new bodies and new engines. When the E65 came out, most engines were
already known (so you avoid engine problems in a new car). Now they
bring new engines ind a known car.

Some years ago I have heard somewhere that this engine swap starts a
wave of car swaps, because many of these cars are used as company cars.
And if your professional status gives you the right to drive the
second-fattest 7'series (because your boss has the fattest one), then
you can claim a 750i instead of your 2 year old 745i. The bottom line
of that story: New, stronger engines in company cars push sales,
because lots of executives have a reason to change their cars. In
Germany, BMW sells roughly 75% of their cars to companies, so this is
quite an interesting factor.

[snipped]

It is indeed a *major facelift*.
That was in fact the point of contention...

Bullshit. They have made the front lights larger with more curves. they have
enlarged the grills, the hace enlarged the tailights that are fixed in the
truck (but not those fixed in the body, they have added chrome highlights to
both the front bumper and rear trunk and if ou look hard enough you will
notice that the hood sits higher, maybe an inch or so.

That's it for the exterior design. Nothing more, nothing less. Still go the
broad curvy flanks, still got the high sill, still got the bulbous trunk,
still got the disparate dimensions...in fact with the exception of the
headlights, the car has still got all the cues that were complained about
and critisized in the first release.

They have simply not retreated from the design direction the embarked on in
2002.

That's more bullshit....you are just a victim of Bangle's comment that it
takes people time to become accustomed to change.

Occam's Razor suggests the easier, more obvious answer: you are blind.

Sorry...

The car is essentially the same with the exception of the changes I listed
prior. And while you can act like an a.s, you can't dispute that with
anything approaching fact.

BMW has not retreated from it's design focus in any way, with the facelifted
7 series.

Of course they have not. Why should they? The new bangle cars are
tremedously successful all over the world. Maybe they did not succeed in
meeting your personal taste, but that does not bother them, as long as they
have enough other buyers.

You misunderstand Frank. I am arguing the point with people here who claim
BMW is scaling back the design direction because the car hasn't been
succesful or accepted by the buying public.

I own a new "Bangle car"...a 545i. I have stated that here a number of times
prior.

Sorry, I made a mistake and misquoted the figure: According to ams BMW
sold 160.000 units.
