Hi.
I am considering buying a 1996 750il with 200000 km. The car is from a
dealers auction and I had a friend look at it, he told me the car
doesn't appear to have been in an accident but it underwent some
vandalism. Mainly, it has some wholes in the leather seats and the
dashboard looks like it's been scratched with some sharp object. The
internal wiring appeared not to be damaged. On the outside the car
appeared undamaged. The ignition seems to have been tampered with,
(obviously) probably the lock on the steering wheel is broken.
My main questions are:
1. The auction does not allow people to try to start the cars or
doesn't even hand out the key (until paid for). I am wondering (I know
this is very speculative) what would be the chance that the engine is
toast or the transmission messed after some heavy "joy riding"
2. I checked the price for the drivers side window (which is broken)
and for the lock-change-kit and it looks like $240 + $1000 + (whatever
it costs to restore the leather and the dashboards). I know that the
answer to this question is also very speculative but, what would be a
fair price to pay for this potential money pit?
Thanks.
Cheers, from Canada
Christopher.

If you need to ask us this question then you really shouldn't be buying
this car.

I would suggest paying 250 US$, which is about the price you can get, if
you sell the original rims on ebay. The BMW 750i is one of the most
complicated and most demanding BMWs built ever. So it should only be bought
after a close examination. If you cannot test the systems, the car may as
well turn out to be a big pile of sh*t.

Whatever you can get for the parts if you have to part it out.

Good point, but leave room for some profit for your time.

They do not let you even start (never mind drive) the car? Never
heard of such a thing. I would run away as fast as I could or this
may turn out to be a very expensive lesson.
