Side mirror leaking strange liquid "damaging"paint....

Dugout Boy - 08 Feb 2005 16:30 GMT My 00 M5 passenger door mirror starting leaking a fluid that ran down on the door, making it necessary to use a strong solvent solution to remove it.
The mirror facing is now shot.
What could have caused it? Have owned BMWs for years and nothing ever happened like this.

If they are and they're like the auto dimming rear view mirror, there is a chemical in the mirror that reacts to the electrical charge when the sensor senses light. The part of the mirror that contains this fluid must have been damaged. If they're not auto dimming then I have no idea.

tech27 - 09 Feb 2005 04:58 GMT That's very odd. The mirror is controlled electronically with a motor which allows adjustment. It sounds like the motor has burned out, maybe heating up something which caused the "liquid" and subsequent damage to the mirror. It is easy enough to remove the mirror - you need to slide a little tab over which unlocks the mirror from the assembly. You can see it by using a flashlight and looking in behind the mirror. You need to move the mirror to either and up/down or side/side extreme. A small flathead screwdriver can be used to move the slide tab. Then you can look at the parts to see what looks fried.

It's just the mirror facing itself that is ruined.
Thanks for the info on removal.
ThaDriver - 10 Feb 2005 06:22 GMT >The motor is in good condition as the lens still moves when the car is put in reverse and returns to saved position once car is out of reverse. ******* WTF??? > You *should* be able to see well out of a > properly adjusted mirror no matter what gear the car is in... ???!!! Maybe > it's for folks that have broken their neck & are wearing a brace? No, it's because the standard mirror glass does not have a large enough field of view to see both the rear corner and a decent view far enough behind. Go read a manual or three and you'll see. But I suppose that is totall irrelevant to a f.cking moron like you who probably drives a stupid jacked-up Ford F150 with tires that have a 24" sidewall.
You are right. Why have any "features" on a car besides engine, brakes, and steering wheel. No need to buy a car you can't afford to fix. But if you EVER DO buy a new car, there is a thing called a warranty. Jerk.

His big complaint is that the tilting passenger side mirror is a stupid "gimmic" that is totally useless, and will cost big bucks to fix. What is the point? Why would someone show up here to complain about 1 BMW feature? Does it make BMW a lousy manufacturer? Why would anyone that has no interest in BMW's even care? Why would you (or I), bother to post to the SAAB ng about some insignificant feature (like why the ignition is where they decided to put it) if we don't care for or own one? Not that I see where it makes a difference (nor do I care), but I check & post to several other groups; guess you didn't pick them up. I visit/post to these groups mostly 'cause I *own* at least one car of each mark, or work on them frequently (# following = # owned). I do so on the following at talkaboutautos.com: Auto Parts Wanted BMW (this group) (currently 0 - expect this to change *back* very soon - did have E21) Chrysler (1) Corvette (0) Dodge - Trucks (2) Fiero (1) Kit Cars (0) Nissan Z-Car (2) Porsche (0) Rod-n-Custom Rod-n-Custom 2 (several of my cars are custom) Subaru (1) V.W - watercooled (1) V.W. - aircooled (3) Volkswagen Beetle (same as above) & at Yahoo: cabrioletandcabrio (same as VW watercooled)) BMW_E21_Digest (ditto above) FIERO (ditto above) datsun210 (1 - roadracer) AND....several others that I visit when I have time. Does this redeem me for having an opinion on the self-misadjusting mirror? And hey BTW: what happens if you're backing out of a parking spot in a lot? LOL) You should not back out just by using mirrors. You should always crank your body and head around to look through the back window for a wide view while you are backing out. Even that doesn't ensure you don't miss something. Backing up in tight quarters is always tricky and the parking lot is frequently where accidents occur. A good way to execute the look around is to grab the seat back or the headrest of the passenger seat and pull yourself around. Steer with the other arm.
The tilting side mirror is just for looking at the curb or whatever may pose a hazard to your rear passenger side rim. I suggest you try it in a car with low profile tires before you pan feature.
I appreciate certain aspects of your crustiness but please give it a rest.

I always check all three mirrors more than once, & turn around as much as possible to look behind while slowly backing up. At my age it's not as easy (turning around that is) as it used to be, even using the pass. seat. Also the more I turn around the less control I have with the clutch.
