Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get behind the instrument cluster? E36

Thanks

This is a good job for a Bentley Service Manual for your car.

Having said that and having never taken the instrument cluster out before,
the steering wheel has to come off, then there are a few screws in the
dashboard and the cluster comes out.

Not sure about E36, but E30 , E32 and E34 clusters all come out without
removing the steering wheel (unlike what the manual says).
I just centre the wheel (and lower it if adjustable), undo the two top
screws, slide it outwards, unclip the cables etc then slide it out thought
the top of the steering wheel while facing it downwards.  Reverse proceedure
to put it back in.  It's a tight fit though the wheel but it will go
through.  Takes about 4 minutes.

That does not work on my E34.  I know, I tried...  hard!  Maybe the
airbag wheel makes the difference?

I squeak my E30 cluster out sideways, behind the wheel towards the center of
the car, rather than through it.

Recommend covering the class with duct tape or masking tape to prevent
scratches -- first time I did it I scratched mine up a fair bit.
