Wiper adjustment

Is there an adjustment to stop the wiper arm just touching the
bonnet/hood?

I seem to recall it happening on my 530i and the specialist technician I
used back then, I think, simply adjusted something. Of course I could be
mis-remembering.

As my 520 is the same model (e34) I'm guessing the same procedure will
work?

If you look at the mounting point for the wiper you should see a way to
remove the wiper assembly and reset it at rest so it doesn't hit the "hood"
(-;

This is if it IS hitting you on the bonnet when at rest. If it only does
this when the wipers are moving I don't know how you can adjust the travel.

The wiper arm is mounted on a splined shaft.  You can remove the arm
and re-install it at a slightly different angle at rest.

On my E34, changing the position of the arm on the spline would have made
no difference to it touching the bonnet - as it was the 'round' part of
the arm which was touching. I assumed it was wear in the wheel box.

Have a close look and you'll probably find it's due to wear in the bushes on
the drive spindles. This can be reduced by adding shimms (you can buy these
from a BMW dealer, as they are listed on the ETK). Also, replace the
connecting link from the motor crank arm to the wiper arm operating rod. Itt
is about 8" long and has two plastic sockets which simply clip over the
'balls' on the end of the crank arm and operating rod. These wear out quite
quickly it seems. This is about ?4.50 and is always in stock (fancy that eh?
design fault? never.....)
Also buy some of the 2-piece plastic 'push-rivets' which hold the grills in
palce as these always break.
Let me know if you need any more info.
cheers,
JB

Thanks JB, I've got the ETK so will have a peek. I'm on the look out for
a copy of the TIS shortly so I suppose ebay's the best place to start?
