Hello Bmw chronies once again. I have come across a problem with knocking
and pinging, but am not too sure if it is the knock sensor or the timing
chain. There was no check engine light on, but the sensor has a crack in it.
It does not look like a very easy job, so I am asking if the check engine
light must be on in order to have a bad sensor or can this sensor not be
detected so easily by the onboard computer?

Knock sensors don't light the CEL, but will set a code. Check the codes.
