I recently ran down my battery in my 2001 740i, and since then my key does
not activate the functions (memory settings, etc.). When I got a new key
from the dealer (when I bought the car they couldn't find it), and the
salesman went through a procedure to initialize the key by putting it in the
ignition then going through a few steps. I didn't see exactly what he did,
but I need to do it now.

I've RTGDM but it doesn't contain any help about this. Does anyone out there
know the procedure?

Thanks

About a year ago one of the service advisors at All Pro BMW in Gainsville,
FL told me how to do this, but I can't find where I wrote it down.  The way
it's described here sounds right though.

One thing I forgot to mention is that in the instructions I linked to, step
2 "Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly" I think needs to be done 5
times in rapid succession rather than just once.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try, but I sure don't remember the
salesman holding the key near his left shoulder, but who knows, maybe this
is the best way to do it.

Thanks again.
