Are the seatbelts in my 1974 bmw 2002 interchangeable with a 1972?

Thanks in advance,

Shnewb

Shnewb,
Not sure as you are crossing that 1973-1974 line when the feds required
more stringent safety standards. I would tend to think that the 3 body
mounting points would be consistent, so as long as you got both halves
of the mechanism (belt & latch), it should work. I believe I even had a
Fiat belt in my 73 2002 at one time. Mounted up fine.
Cheers,
Howard

I had an early '72 2002 that had a chrome center attachment loop for the
non-retractable belts. Late '72 cars had retractable belts that didn't work
all that well. Prior to selling my 2002 in '90, I replaced the stock belts
(they were worn out) with the retractable parts, and they were OK.
Naturally, both ends of the belts were replaced, and they fit in the stock
mounting points. I drive an '04 E65 now, but I still miss my 2002.

The old style seatbelts in the 2002 are instant death, especially if your
seatpads are worn.  They'll cut right across your belly to cut you in two in an
accident.  Seatbelts need to go across your hips.

I don't know how good the later ones are.  I put an aftermarket race-type kit in
mine.

"The first thing you need to do is get some late-style seatbelts from a
'72 or later car. It is probably worthwhile to get a NEW set of belts, or
at least ones that you have checked thoroughly for wear, fraying, signs
of stretching. "

So it looks like the '72 are the same as later ones, but pre '72 might be
different.

I'd visit www.bmw2002faq.com and ask on the forum there -- those guys
know everything

best of luck
