fluid is leaking from the rubber boots on my steering rack. Is there a
rebuild kit available? The year is an 86. How tough is the removal and
replacement I just did the oil pump and pan gasket.

You should be able to exchange the entire rack for a reconditioned one, but
you could also replace it with one from a wreck.  You need specialised
machinery and a press to rebuild it properly yourself.  There are two
different racks for the E30 so make sure you get the right one (steel and
alloy).

With a sufficient amount of beer and bandaids you should be able to reseal
the P/S rack.  You will need to be able to remove pressed in seals and
replace them. Also make sure you use the proper fluid to prevent becoming an
expert at the job.

I don't like the idea of used parts as I prefer not to do the same repairs
over because of someone elses worn out part installed on my vehicle.  I
check with my guys at www.mybmwpartsstore.com and they told me $555.00 for a
rack and about $100. for the seal kit.

Good luck............Chip
