I have a 316i (E36)97/P, and the air con keeps coming on and shutting off
on its own accord. one dodgy bmw trained mechanic said, its a fault on
these models. and the panel needs replacing, which will cost 180 quid exc
labour. Anyone heard of this? Or know where i can get one cheap?

It seems a fairly standard problem; try Googling for "final stage resistor
BMW"
