After the wife smashed my 325i and I am looking for a newer car.
I am probably looking for a early-mid 90s 535i or 540i or even 740i.
Can anybody tell me what to watch for?

I know there was issues with the 4.0 V8, does anybody have more details?
If they had the recall done, are they fine? How is the 4.4?

Anything to look out for in the M30 engine? Any bad years?

I am triing to find a manual but might have to get a auto due to the limit
avail
in my area. How are the autos in these models? any issues?

Thanks for any advice given

The issue also exists with the 3.0L V8.  All 4.4L V8's are fine (and no 3.5L
V8s
were exported to the US).  See

for more info (I note that Brett has changed his website, so this is a new
address!)

The M30 is a rock, unless it was overheated.  Last model year was '92 IIRC.
I've seen plenty of E34 535i with manual (in Seattle area).  Main problem
with
E34 is front suspension bushing wear.  Google E34 to find other problems.

The thing with the E34 535i with the M30 engine is unlike the E28
counterpart, its prone to headgasket problems. Go to Bruno's excellent
E34 website and the accompanying forum, almost everyone on it has had
to replace the headgasket.

Bruno also has a faq has to what to look out for:

I agree... Bruno's site is fantastic, and also ...
http://www.bimmer.info/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4
is best forum for E34, I have a 540i, love the power, but it sucks gas hard,
mine runs very well, but I know most bimmerinfo members will advise a 535
for the best e34.
Less trouble in general. E34 are prone to 55 mile per hour shimmies as well,
must change front end parts routinely, but it WORTH IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The problems are a small price to pay for a very rewarding and safe ride.
