Easy way to tell M62 4.4 from M60 4.0?

Anybody know if there's an easy way to tell these two engines apart (on
an E38) other than scrabbling around to find the engine casting number?
 Both non-vanos versions.

I would think the VIN and model year would be sufficient since they were
never used in the same year.

True.  But if you're looking at a 95 740iL , for example, it may have had
the engine swapped from the original M60 nikasil to the M62 alusil.  AFAIK,
the only way to tell visually is by finding the casting number on the block.
If you contact BMW with the VIN, they may be able to tell you if the swap
has occurred.
