BMW 318is / window indicator lights

just bought a '96 318is, my first BMW and great fun to drive :)  one
stupid rookie question - are the window indicator leds (down next to the
gearstick) supposed to stay on forever...? if not what have i done (or
not done).... everything else is off.

For some reason they stay on for quite a while after switch off (~10 mins).

ok - well its been 3 hrs and they're still on... :) the red alarm LED
blinks down in the same area but that's normal AFAIK...

just FYI to anybody who is wondering/cares... BMW has traced the problem
to improper installation of a mongoose alarm.  also as a result of the
alarm wiring, the arming and disarming chooses doors to lock or unlock
at random, and makes opening the passenger door with key impossible....
off to the auto-electrician now :)
