Hi - pondering buying a 325is from 1993 that needs a new auto
transmission and a muffler.  Can you tell me how much I would expect to
pay for these replacements?  Thank you.

In the UK, a *new* transmission would cost more than the car is worth, and
even a reconditioned one pretty close. So I'd get some firm prices for
both before contemplating buying.

really?!  i haven't had to deal with car repair for quite some time now
so i guess i'm out of the loop, but, judging by the kelley blue book
value of the car, that's a lot for a transmission!

thank you for the info.

You need to remember that cars depreciate a lot faster in the UK.  Also,
BMWs don't have the cachet appeal there that they do here in the US.

But a '93 isn't worth a whole lot, even in good shape.  Maybe $5-6k...
So a new transmission would be out of the question.  A used or rebuilt
one would be the way to go.

I used one would set you back 100-300 pounds but then of course there's
the fitting.  The other thing is that often if a car needs this it'll
also need that, and then some.  If you can get the car super-cheap and
don't mind the hassle then it may be worthwhile.

one last question - i'd rather get a 5-speed but in my price range, i'm
looking at cars with close to 100k miles, so a transmission change
might be impending.  any ballpark figures for a manual transmission
replacement?  i know it's cheaper than an auto, but if anyone has any
specific numbers, i'd appreciate your input.  thanks again!

If you buy a car with a manual it is highly unlikely that you will have
to replace the transmission.  A clutch job, perhaps.  Figure on $500-700
or so for that at an independent garage.

Well, I replaced a manual trans. (auto trans cost more)  about four years
(price has gone up) ago on a nissan truck (alot cheaper than any part for a
BMW). It cost about $800 us. I dont know if that helps any but based on all
of tat I would guess that a new trans. would cost about 2000-3000. I also
recently replaced my exhaust system because I had a bad cat. it cost $1100.

Two years ago I had a car with a and transmission and bad exhaust. I found
a really good exhaust, needed a new $137 front pipe and found the bits to
repair the transmission. Took a week or two going slowly and fixed
a bunch of other things too.

If you're gonna take the care in someplace and say "fix this call mne when you're
done" then expect to pay. But if you're doing it yourself it's really more a question
of where so you get parts: ebay, car-part.com and hang around online forums for your
chassis and see what pops up. You can sometimes get stuff off craigslist.org to.

I'd hold out for the manny tranny to be honest. And if possible get manual
windows, seats and heat. Euro versions are worth looking at they usually come
this way.

Well, considering the dealer wants $900 to replace 3 leaky hydraulic
power-steering hoses* in my E46...  I'd hate to think what a tranny
would cost.

*About half parts and half labor, they said.  Can it really take a
professional mechanic 3 or 4 hours to replace 3 hoses?

If it's anything like the E39, it's those silly cramped connectors which
cause the leaks. Replacing them with worm drive (Jubilee) clips sorts the
leaks for pennies.

Labour at a UK main dealer is 120 GBP per hour, so that would make it
nearer two. ;-)

Yeah, and probably all you really need to do is get some good hose
clamps on the ends of those hoses.  The crimp on clamps from the factory
always leak sooner or later.  Very common on the power steering systems
in the 90's vintage cars (E34s and E36's)

Bah. There's nothing special about high pressure hydraulic hoses;
go to a place that sells them, have them make you up a set then
have some more economical mechanic fit them. There really are
guys that have all the hoses and conectors and they're waaaaaay
cheaper than the ones from Germany and work just fine.

Any trammy is just $500 if you're careful and patient. Just swap.

I don't think that they are even high pressure hoses that are leaking.
The hoses between the reservoir and pump are the ones that usually start
to dribble and those hoses are under low pressure.
