I have a 1999 528i. the last couple days an odd issue has arose. When I
start the car after its been sitting for a few hours (4+) there is a noise
emitting from the driver side area of the engine compartment. If I turn the
steering wheel in either direction the noise get abit louder. Its sort of a
reeering noise. If you drive it aways (10mi or so) the noise goes away and
doesn't return till the car has sat. I thought possibly the Power steering
pump, but from what I can tell this car doesn't have one and it has a
Rack/Pinion type setup instead, and I could be completely wrong on that
also.

Anyone have ideas on this odd noise that has shown up?

Also...

I have not noticed any issues with Steering at all, that all seems to be
fine, nice and tight.

Low power steering fluid?

I checked and it looks to be to the "Full" line on the stick. I will double
check tonight.

Anyone else have some ideas? Thanks in advance!

Even if it has rack and pinion steering, it has a power steering pump. Look
some more.

HINT
It will be driven by a fan belt on the front of the motor.

I took a quick glance, (not removing any "covers") but there is alot hidden,
I will double check.

Thanks again

Mark you were right, I went back and the reservoir was almost empty! Now I
have to track down where this leak is. I filled it again to be safe and that
seems to have fixed the bad sound.

Thanks for the help guys!
