I guess I missed the joke. I live 40 miles from work, and many many
miles from any state forests or other appropriate riding. I know many
ride to the trails, and more power to them, but it's not an option
where I live. Had I carpooled in and ridden to the ride I'd get there
a good 45 mins after everyone else left.
What'd I miss?

Just the idea that in order to ride a bike you have to drive there in a *truck*

It's a 6cyl compact single cab, and gets over 20mpg on the highway.
Just about 20 on the back roads. Since I drive rarely, I chose a
utilitarian vehicle. Being a somewhat new homeowner with a fixer-
upper of a house, a good percentage of my driving is hauling stuff for
the house. Another good percent of my vehicle use is hauling boats
around. A car would have been completely impractical, as my last
vehicle (a car) nicely demonstrated. FWIW, I have a 2mpg difference
from my old 4cyl car, which wasn't able to do most of the things I
needed. I can see your point though; I should have specified that I'm
not referring to an extended cab F350 when I say truck.
Also, I ride my bike all the time without my truck involved. In order
to meet this group at this time I need the truck, but I don't need the
truck to ride my bike. Most of my riding is vehicle-free.

Isn't a bike a vehicle? The CA Vehicle Code thinks so.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. NH & MA, the two states I normally
ride in, qualify a bike as a vehicle as well. I should have said
"motor vehicle".

He drove to work with the bike in the truck because he's going for a ride
after work at a place too far from where he works to get there in time
otherwise. Pretty simple.
Many times I have driven closer to my destination with the bicycle in the
car and then complete the trip by bicycle. Usually when I am going to a
place where parking is difficult.

That's the modus operandi for Harley owners, isn't it? :-)

Harley owners need the truck to get the bike home when it craps the
cot. My pedal bikes tend to be more reliable, and even if there is an
issue I'm almost always able to repair it in the field at least well
enough to ride home. I've been stranded w/ a bike I couldn't fix once
in the past few years, which isn't too bad. Had I not had such a
cheap rear wheel it wouldn't have happened, and it certainly won't
happen again.

That's it?
A co-worker of mine who lives 60 miles from work rode his bike today.
Okay, he drove halfway, parked and biked the rest of the way, but you
would only have to go an extra 5 miles each way and you wouldn't have
had to drive at all.

I thought this was simple, but it appears Brent is the only one who
gets it. The distance from work does not require me to drive, I
usually carpool in and pedal home. The meeting @ 5:30 and a work
schedule that keeps me here past 5PM required me to use my truck if I
wanted to catch this group to ride with them. It so happens I did
want to catch said group to ride with them, so I took the truck.
Kudos to your co-worker, but it's irrelevant to this situation.
