Hi All,
If you've ever been to East Palo Alto, Calif., a vibrant & progressive
community that figuratively melds African-American and Hispanic culture,
odds are you've driven up and down University Avenue. During the work-week
commute, thousands of motorists may jam this artery to reach nearby Palo
Alto by way of the Dumbarton Bridge.
There's more trivia to the area, however. University is Avenue is a hidden
jewel, if you will, in California legislation. That's because it's unsigned
California State Route 109!

Is "vibrant and progressive" "former murder
capital of the United States"? Yes, East Palo Alto is somewhat
upscale these days... but the original dangerous folks are still
around

In all fairness, that "murder capital" designation was based on
murders per capita and was the result of a major drug-related
shootout in EPA about twenty years ago. It was a big-time
statistical blip that year.

In all fairness, that's one thing Calrog got right (OK, correct, if you
insist). As a former EPA resident, I represent your remarks, which
apparently spring more from ignorance than anything else. (As Hatunen
pointed out, the "murder rate", another misnomer, is a per capita thing,
and EPA is only 2.5 square miles. However, I can attest to hearing
automatic and semi-automatic gunfire a *lot* around that time.)
Yes, the "original dangerous folks" are still around: San Mateo County
sheriffs, CHP officers, etc.

Any system of knowledge that is capable of listing films in order
of use of the word "f.ck" is incapable of writing a good summary
and analysis of the Philippine-American War. And vice-versa.
This is an inviolable rule.
