So I pull up to a red light. It's a nice day so my windows are down.
Stereotypical SoCal surfer dude in the SUV next to me starts to ask me
something.
"Excuse me, sir - this might sound strange, but..."
Just as he started talking, the light turned green. I pointed up to
the light, said "light's green, dude!" and pulled away.
I absolutely HATE it when a couple of a.sholes sit there in the middle
of the street having a f.cking conversation between their cars,
meanwhile a zillion other cars are stuck behind them, waiting
needlessly. If you want to ask for directions, pull over (or, better
yet, get a nav system); if you want to chat with your friends, then
you should all ride in the SAME car.
Anyway, my sense was this was not some poor lost soul about to ask me
for directions to the nearest surf shop. My instinct told me he was
about to ask me if I wanted to buy some speakers, of if my car needed
bodywork, or some similar scam. In any case, I sure as hell wasn't
going to block two lanes of traffic to find out.
D'ya think that was rude of me? :)

No, you weren't rude. You were actually polite. But I don't think he
was going to try to scam you. Quite possibly, he might have been
interested in buying your car and wanted to know if you would be
interested in selling it.

Hmm... Nothing special about my car. There must be thousands just like
it driving around...

You think a 2005 Corvette is some kind of rare collector car?

Not at all. But it's a nice enough used car that it might solicit
queries about its availability for sale.
The other driver might have been looking to buy a late model used
Corvette (if you were driving it) in the color of yours.

Not in the least, and we've got dullards who like to have "middle of
the road" conferences here, too. Of course, I also work with people
who like to have "elevator" conferences, where they keep the door of
the elevator open to carry on a conversation with one of the
occupants. Knocks 1/4th of our capacity out when those idiots do that.
Fortunately I believe some of them are about to lose their jobs. :-)

Yes, but he started it. SUV's are rude too!

I wouldn't have waited even long enough to say that.
Anyone who stays and talks is the one being rude.

Agreed...see the definition of "Milan Traffic Jam" on the page.

That causes nasty traffic jams in a town of 2,000.

On the contrary, it was damn considerate of you....

No. I don't think it was rude.
In fact, most of the time if someone wants to ask for directions to a
location, they'll just ask without prefacing it with "this might sound
strange". As in: "Excuse me, do you know how to get to %location%?"
Prefacing it with "this might sound strange" more than likely means they
were going to ask something stupid and see what your reaction was, or maybe
ask something that might make you angry and again, see what your reaction
was. If any one of the passengers (assuming there were passengers) also had
a camera phone at ready, they might have been attempting to YouTube whatever
reaction you gave them (except that they never got to finish their
question).

Seems a little rude to waste the bandwidth to report such an

If course, you think it's alright for drivers to stop in the middle of
the road for no reason, so this doesn't surprise me.

Not at all.
However, I'd be DAMN curious what he was going to follow that "strange"
intro with...
"...do any other people call you 'sir'?"
"...does this bathing suit make me look FAT?"
"...if I throw mustard at your car, would you be able to tell?"
"...can you see my girlfriend's head from where you're sitting?"
"...could you tell me if O.J. was guilty or not?"
"...what' is the quickest way to get to Brunswick, New Jersey from here?"
"...Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour On The Bedpost Overnight?"
"...could you tell me your opinion on the growing amount of albino births in
Azerbaijan and what their consequences on the future there might be?"
"...if the light turned green, would you just be rude and take off?"
"...are Lenny Kravitz and Gladys Kravitz from 'Bewitched' related?"
"...would you go out with me?"
Uhm, among many others.
Heheheheh.
