The recipient of today's Darwin Award is Marcia Soto! By SERENA MARIA DANIELS ELYSSSE JAMES and MARK EADES The Orange County Register LAKE FOREST - Sunday started as it did most days for Marcia Soto. She woke up early to go for a jog. When she didn't return, housemate Debbie Chwatek, 49, and her sister went out looking for Soto along her usual route. That's when Chwatek saw the police cars. Soto was killed by a car at 6:02 a.m., while running westbound with her i-pod on the eastbound side of Bake Parkway, just of North Pointe Drive. She was running in the bike lane, said Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. The driver, Kevin Young, 44, of Long Beach, an off-duty security guard, was driving a company-owned Toyota Yaris when he veered to the right and struck Soto, Amormino said. No arrests have been made, he said. The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge joggers to use sidewalks if they are there. It is actually illegal to use a bike lane when a sidewalk is an option. The bike lane separation stripe is dashed for 50 feet prior to each intersection to remind people of this fact. Judging from the description in the store, as well as the early morning hour and the fact that the driver was just getting off his night shift job, I'd say our award winning jogger was in the turn zone and because it was dark and he was tired the guy just didn't see her. In chicago the MFFY will use any paved or unpaved surface to get by. The primary time you'll see a MFFY driver enter the carpool lane illegally is when there is a long line of stopped cars in the rightmost through lane; the MFFYs enter the bike lane early to bypass the stopped cars. Assuming, of course, that no "disenabler" has stopped too far over to the right and made it too narrow for the first MFFY to pass. A sidewalk is about the worst surface possible to run on. Back when I actually exercised on a regular basis (wow, that sounds kind of bad doesn't it?) I at least lived in an area with dirt/cinder shoulders so most of the time I could run on that which was far more forgiving than concrete. I don't know about you guys but more than a couple miles on concrete and my legs are on fire. True, but given the choice between running on concrete and not running at all, most serious runners would give serious consideration to the "turning into a fat sack of sh.t" option. It's that bad. Try it > sometime, if you don't believe me. Frankly, running (or jogging) is not a good way to exercise. Unless one runs (or jogs) on an ideal surface, the pounding that ones feet and legs take while running (especially for older adults) is really bad for the joints and tendons. There's a nice little memorial on the south side of the street, approximately mid-block; no driveways or side streets were anywhere nearby. Assuming this memorial marks the actual spot where the jogger was struck, there's no question the driver was in the bike lane illegally (just like the jogger). One other note: I did see one jogger during my trip. She was very wisely jogging ON THE SIDEWALK.
