Jogger, 48, killed on Bake Parkway in Lake Forest
"I'm very sorry,'' says driver of car, off-duty security guard.
By SERENA MARIA DANIELS ELYSSSE JAMES and MARK EADES
The Orange County Register
LAKE FOREST - Sunday started as it did most days for Marcia Soto. She
woke up early to go for a jog.
When she didn't return, housemate Debbie Chwatek, 49, and her sister
went out looking for Soto along her usual route.
That's when Chwatek saw the police cars.
Soto was killed by a car at 6:02 a.m., while running westbound with
her i-pod on the eastbound side of Bake Parkway, just of North Pointe
Drive. She was running in the bike lane, said Orange County Sheriff's
spokesman Jim Amormino.
The driver, Kevin Young, 44, of Long Beach, an off-duty security
guard, was driving a company-owned Toyota Yaris when he veered to the
right and struck Soto, Amormino said.
No arrests have been made, he said. The investigation is ongoing.
Authorities urge joggers to use sidewalks if they are there. It is
actually illegal to use a bike lane when a sidewalk is an option. But
runners prefer to exercise on asphalt roads rather than concrete
because the surface is softer.

Didn't you argue that people don't drive in the bike lane? Could swear
that you did when I said the painted line offers no protection and
motorists will use it as an additional lane whenever they want to.

>Didn't you argue that people don't drive in the bike lane?
No. In CA, people are REQUIERD BY LAW to drive in the bike lane when
making a right turn. The bike lane separation stripe is dashed for 50
feet prior to each intersection to remind people of this fact.
Judging from the description in the store, as well as the early
morning hour and the fact that the driver was just getting off his
night shift job, I'd say our award winning jogger was in the turn zone
and because it was dark and he was tired the guy just didn't see her.

And your local MFFY don't use it any time they feel like? I doubt it. In
chicago the MFFY will use any paved or unpaved surface to get by. One day
on a two lane road I was in queue of vehicles stacked up behind a left
turner.... with two wheels on the gravel shoulder and two on the slant of
the drainage ditch from behind comes this pick up truck passing everyone
in the queue.

Or was just mid block and some MFFY driver on his morning commute wanted to
get around some sloth and gunned through the bike lane without looking.

I doubt that traffic was too heavy at that time. Maybe he is an animal
lover and swerved over into the bike lane to avoid running over a squirrel.
I seen drivers do crazy stuff to avoid running over an animal.

Not generally, no. The primary time you'll see a MFFY driver enter the
carpool lane illegally is when there is a long line of stopped cars in
the rightmost through lane; the MFFYs enter the bike lane early to
bypass the stopped cars. Assuming, of course, that no "disenabler" has
stopped too far over to the right and made it too narrow for the first
MFFY to pass.

I doubt that any 48-year-old women would be eligible for a Darwin Award.
Her biological clock has probably ticked too many ticks by that age.

Are you kidding? That's the age where modern-day career women BEGIN

No sh.t, Sherlock. A sidewalk is about the worst surface possible to
run on.
Back when I actually exercised on a regular basis (wow, that sounds
kind of bad doesn't it?) I at least lived in an area with dirt/cinder
shoulders so most of the time I could run on that which was far more
forgiving than concrete. I don't know about you guys but more than a
couple miles on concrete and my legs are on fire. (of course, more
than a couple miles on anything *today* and my *lungs* would probably
be on fire...)

In this case, she'd have been better off had she run on the concrete.
The asphalt turned out to me MUCH worse.

True, but given the choice between running on concrete and not running
at all, most serious runners would give serious consideration to the
"turning into a fat sack of sh.t" option. It's that bad. Try it
sometime, if you don't believe me.

Frankly, running (or jogging) is not a good way to exercise. Unless one
runs (or jogs) on an ideal surface, the pounding that ones feet and legs
take while running (especially for older adults) is really bad for the
joints and tendons. A brisk walk or bicycling is a lot better way to
get a workout and burn off some calories.

Swimming is even better, actually, but some people take to running. My
dad still runs every day (i guess he's got some natural aptitude for it,
he was a track and cross-country coach until he retired. These days, he
could probably beat me either running or cycling; I might take him
swimming on technique alone.)

Because you a.sholes own the road. She happened to be doing what
thousands of people get up and do every day and was unfortunate enough
to be in the wrong spot in the road when someone happened to ILLEGALLY
fall asleep in his car instead of at home. Heartless bastard.

LOL!! Another "relative" crawls out of the woodwork! :)
So what do you mean "you a.sholes?" Unless you never drive a car, YOU
are also one of the "a.sholes."

...ILLEGALLY...

You mean STUPID

This twit shouldn't have been IN the road at all. Pedestrians belong
on the SIDEWALK. Had she been where she was supposed to be, she would
be alive today.
>when someone happened to ILLEGALLY

Um, where in the article does it say that the driver fell asleep?

I happened to drive by the site of the collision on my way to lunch
today. There's a nice little memorial on the south side of the street,
approximately mid-block; no driveways or side streets were anywhere
nearby. Assuming this memorial marks the actual spot where the jogger
was struck, there's no question the driver was in the bike lane
illegally (just like the jogger).
One other note: I did see one jogger during my trip. She was very
wisely jogging ON THE SIDEWALK.
