A Tale of Two 'Tards

So I'm driving down the street in the right hand lane. In the lane to
my left is some guy in a white Subaru WRX STI (vanity plate: "DADS
STI"). He's been driving pretty lacadaisically for the last few miles
- no sense of urgency whatsoever. Suddenly, as we are getting close to
the freeway, he suddenly wakes up and decides he wants to get into the
right lane, because the freeway on-ramp is coming up. Never mind the
fact that he had several miles' worth of opportunities to get into the
right lane which he blithely passed up; a lack of planning on his part
is obviously supposed to constitute an emergency on everyone else's
part. He's slightly ahead of me, so he flips on his signal, slows
down, and waits for me to slow down and let him in. Sorry, "Dad," but
I'm no JLEDI. I continue at the posted speed limit, forcing him to
wait until I pass so he can then merge in behind me.

As I take the on-ramp to the 405, I kick it up to about 75 MPH (which
is the speed that traffic usually flows on freeways in this area) and
merge smoothly into moderately heavy traffic. Aparently this just
isn't fast enough for DADS STI, who guns it and tries to merge past
me. Unfortunately for him, this black Dodge Magnum with a loud
aftermarket exhaust (vanity plate: "1BAD4DOR") is in the lane to his
left, and DADS STI is boxed in. Curses - foiled again!!

Now DADS STI is *really* pissed. As soon as 1BAD4DOR moves up a bit,
DADS STI punches it and flies around both of us. 1BAD4DOR sees this as
an invitation to play in traffic, and with a loud roar takes off after
him. These two clowns then proceed to dodge and weave off into the
sunset at well over 90 MPH. I figure there's about to be a huge
accident up ahead, so I quickly duck off the freeway at the next exit
and take surface streets instead. :)

Yeah, I never know what to do when confronted with the prospect of
being stuck behind a belching diesel.  Passing them always makes them
think I want to play, when I really just don't want to breathe their
stink - growing up in LA may have made me more sensitive or
something.  Had this happen again yesterday, extremely aggressive F350
Dually, I just let it go.  Then I see the bumper stickers on the back
window - PETA and something about vegetarianism.  The idea of a smog-
belching resource hog animal rights nutcase struck me as somehow odd
and humorous.

Now here's a tale of one 'tard, or maybe Darwin is just about 70 years
too late:  http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080315/news_1m15trolley.html

Never did find out exactly what caused the NB Amtrak to no-show Friday
morning.  They announced there had been an accident.
