Interstates 238 and 880 notes (Calif., USA)

Hi Viatologists,

Planned improvement ensues along two of the SF East Bay's corridors:

Interstate 238 is undergoing a multi-year widening project.  With each
carriageway expected to get one extra lane (minimum), traffic standstill at
all hours should one day be mitigated.  Currently, the route tends to bottle
up day and night due to traffic patterns and barricaded shoulder.

Interstate 880 has seen its share of construction too.  As I previously
reported on Usenet groups MTR and RAD, re-implementation has begun w/ the
California State Route 92 interchange.  How so?  In a few years time, a pair
of 270-degree cloverleaf ramps will be replaced by smoother 90-degree
counterparts.  As of March 2008, the ramp from northbound 880 to eastbound
92 has been slightly modified--the one lane distributor has been moved a few
metres inland to facilitate the future northbound-to-westbound transition.
Tractors and cranes are currently moving dirt and creating a path for the
aforementioned transition.

In terms of the 880/262 construction project, expect the interchange to be
closed from 12:00a to 6:00a over the next few weeks.  At that time, the
southbound-to eastbound ramp and Warren Avenue overpass should get some more
attention.  Currently, the overpasses are overlain in wood awaiting what's
next!

The Worldwide Highway Library (WHL) offers a generous supply of Interstate
photographs, videos and WHL-360s.   As you may know, archived footage is one
of the WHL's specialties.  To illustrate, here's an archive video of
California 262 whose capture *precedes* the introduction of the
westbound-to-southbound ramp into 880:

For thorough and well-documented overviews of international highways, the
WHL is simply second to none.  Enjoy!

Cheers,

I looked in the the highway design manual and a plethora of other
resources and didn't find carriageways or meters in either one.
More interesting would be noting that 880/92 is getting two
semidirectional ramps, 238 is getting a second lane on each connector
along with metering, and that 880 is scheduled to have the Downtown
Oakland viaducts replaced and widened, and HOV lanes extended north
another couple miles.
The wood is 'falsework', by the way!
