More on the Dash Express

ABC World News (with Charles Gibson) ran a piece on the Dash Express
during this evening's newscast. While watching it I noticed a couple
of things:

Mohit Chopra, a Bay Area driver who has been testing the Dash Express
for the last few months, is in clear violation of CVC 26708 - he has
his Dash Express suction-cupped right to the middle of his windshield!

Also, as has become all too common when the mainstream media reports
on technical subjects, ABC screwed up when they described how the
system works. They said the telemetry data from each car is
transmitted to cell towers (which is correct), and then the aggregate
traffic data is "beamed down from satellites" - WRONG! Only the Global
Positioning data comes from satellites; the traffic data comes through
the same GPRS link that the vehicles' telemetry data went through.

So let's see a show of hands: who's going to pay $400 plus $13/month
to get one of these little buggers? At least with XM NavTraffic you
get to listen to satellite radio programming as part of your overall
subscription. I love electronic gadgets, but I don't think I'll be
picking up a Dash Express anytime soon. How about you?

BTW, I found the original thread where I first proposed this idea:

Those Dash f.ckers stole my idea and never gave me any compensation! I
should use the Google archives as evidence of prior art and challenge
their patents! :)

Gonna be tough with x-no-archive set to "on", right?

E.P.

Duh.  He never thunk of that.

Not if I can find a news server somewhere with 4 years' worth of
retention... :)

Uh, no.  Since you have your no-archive set to "on", that's the point,
they don't get archived by *anyone*.

Sounds like someone is unclear on the concept of X-no-archive. AFAIK,
only DejaNews (now Google Groups) honors it. If you ever decide to try
a real news provider, you'll find that all of my posts are still
available, going back as far as the news server's retention policy
allows.

The Dash crooks waited until your self-imposed 6-day statute of
limitations (no-archive) ran out.  However, you might find evidence in
a reply to one of your earlier posts if you search thoroughly.

They waited a lot longer than that. I guess it took them 4 years to
work out all the bugs and actually deliver a marketable product. :)

Speaking of Dash, I wonder if they're going to license their
technology to other navigation system manufacturers in order to help
build critical mass. If every manufacturer of navigation systems who
wants to implement a shared telemetry system is forced to roll their
own separate, incompatible system, that weakens them all since they
won't be able to share the oh-so-critical traffic data. If they make
it an open system it will quickly become the de-facto standard. They
make the bulk of their money from the monthly service they sell
anyway, not the hardware.

Here's hoping they are smart as opposed to greedy. :)

S&DDAM admits to putting others in danger with its beater
(gramatical errors left as is):

"Foot pumps are a joke. I had one once and since the piston only moves like
2 inches it took 50 pumps to raise the pressure by one psi.  Go with the
hand pumps where the piston moves  around 15 inches. One of my tires has
exposed cords and i have to pump it up every week. "
