Our esteemed County government will screw that up, I'm sure.

Right.

Yeah, I keep *hearing* that. But they've redone the 138 between the Los
Angeles County line and Palmdale. Much of it is brand-new four-lane blacktop.

Well, it would still be nice if we got it. We have serious traffic problems
in certain places as it is, due to a lack of decent east-west thoroughfares.

Actually, I just drove 138 and 18 today, and while there's more 4-laning
than there used to be, they have a long way to go. It's all two lanes east
of 165th until you get to US-395 on 18, or until you get to route 2 on 138.
That said, there's really nothing out there, so 4-laning the rest of it
couldn't be easier. When they do get around to it, it will solve most of the
safety problems. The new 4-lane parts are reeeeally wiiiide, with a wide
turn lane down the middle.
The main benefit of the Palmdale part of the proposed HDC would be a direct
connection to 14 north of downtown--you can see that pretty much all of the
ROW has been set aside along Ave P-8.
But if they can get by with only 4-laning 138 and 18, I wonder if they'll
really do that part, or just build the bit that services the SCLA and Apple
Valley.
Meantime, I'll stick to my preferred route between Palmdale and Adelanto,
which is Palmdale Blvd. and El Mirage Road. Always deserted once you get out
of town.

??
I distinctly remember much of it being four lanes between Littlerock and
the county line. But I could be wrong.

Yes. I've done it both ways, but I prefer 138. 138 is faster.

I remember Select Arterial 680 in San Diego, and that became CA 56, so I
don't really know where they come up with these numbers (although admittedly
the 680 -> 56 connection was less direct, more of a "Son of 680" thing).

I'm in the believe it when I see it category. There has been very little
transportation work in the High Desert and IMHO the Victor Valley needs no
additional hot air. :-D

Over 100 in Phelan (Baldy Mesa) yesterday, right up against the mountains,
at 4000 feet. Was probably hotter near my house in Victorville.
