I was just up there yesterday, and the four-laning proceeds apace. The 14
miles of widening north of Fort Independence looks like the new roadbed is
complete, and wherever I could get a glimpse, it looked like the first layer
of pavement was down. It looks like they could get this sucker finished in
time for ski season.
What's left? From L.A., there's the 16-mile two-lane stretch at the north
end of CA-14, then about 10 miles north of Olancha next to Owens Lake, then
about 10 miles more between Lone Pine and Independence. If they ever finish
all that, it'll be four lanes all the way to Lee Vining. North of that, who
cares?
Of course, there's the small matter of the hundred miles of US-395 south of
the CA-14 split.

Who cares? Doesn't anyone drive to/from Bridgeport, CA or to Carson
City, NV?
The promotions department of Disneyland seems to think that people
drive from Bridgeport to MouseLand, don't they? They offer a special
discount to anyone living in zip codes 93500-93599.
Even though Bridgeport (Zip 93517) is more than a 6½ drive from
Disneyland, their residents qualify for the discount. Residents of
Ehrenberg, AZ (less than 3½ hours away) don't get the discount.
Residents of Tijuana, Mexico (less than 2 hours away) don't get the
discount, but Bridgeporters do!

Well, sure, some people do. I've been up there many times. But the point is
that past Lee Vining--past Mammoth, really--the traffic is never so heavy
that two lanes is a problem.
I think the fourlaning south of there is primarily motivated by the
accidents caused by exhausted (and possibly slightly drunk) skiers trying to
pass long lines of slowpokes on the narrow parts of US-395 on Sunday winter
nights.
