SF : When Do They Tow and Not Tow ?

I was in my commerical truck, parked in a yellow zone, and the SF DPT
cops were tagging regular vehicles parked in the yellow zones.  The tow
trucks pull up, and they point at a mini-van, and proceed to hook it up
and tow it away.  I was wondering, whats the criteria for towing and
not towing?   Is it random?  This was at 1145am, on Grant Ave near
Geary.

I thought I spelled it right.  I'm over here with that nasty Cali flu.
Boy, I had painful coughing, and my voice is gone.

One is a criterion, two are criteria.

Steam.  Robitussin.  Whiskey, honey and lemon juice.  Sleep.  Nothing.
All work equally well.

Next question?  I'm here to help...

Lombard Street?  If there's a steeper one, I don't want to drive down it
in a 1968 van with manual brakes.

Ok, steepest street you can actually drive straight up, as opposed to a
whats on Lombard.
I was thinking about the other day when I was driving up and down
Divisadero near Broadway.  I like those STEEP CREST signs.

I was there in 1983 for Artillery School.  They teach you how to call
in artillery and observe fire.  You sit there and look over 5000-6000
meters of flat ground, and look for smoke as shells are hidden by small
valleys.  They have some really violent thunderstorms out there too.

40 goes north of the San Bernardino Mountains.  About 8-9K feet tops.  10
goes near some desert rock mountains.  You might find google earth
interesting.  I wish they'd improve the resolution of non-city areas --
much better to see mountains in detail than streets and houses.

Steve should have gone a bit north.  Eastern Colorado is piss-plate flat,
until you see these tiny little bumps off on the horizon.  The bumps get
bigger and whiter and then you realize that those are the goddam ROCKIES
just like in the book.

Well, in March of 84, I had a choice between driving thru Colorado, or
thru the Southwest. So I picked the route thru Texas, NM, AZ, and the
CA desert.  I had a 1984 Honda Accord HB, a cooler, and a handful of
tape cassettes.  I took that Honda to Germany with me.  The big
surprise in Germany was.....nobody uses chains in the winter.

Bev, c'mon.  Mission HILLS, HILLcrest, Golden HILL, Banker's HILL, East
HILLS, Paradise HILLS, Lynwood HILLS, etc.  Is San Diego not SoCal, but
rather NorMex, or Western Arizona?

So Cal isn't flat.  Lompoc is in SoCal right?  I drove up and down some
hills on 101S to get there.

In most of San Diego you can see at least one mountain from any beach.
There's nothing flat at all about SoCal, except the beaches and mesas.

The steepest hill I've ever seen in Southern California for a main roadway
(as opposed to a residential area) was a short but steep 11% or 12% grade
where Del Mar Heights Rd. meets the Hwy 101 along the coast, in Del Mar.

I think the sign said 12%, but either way, it was definitely steeper than
the usual 6% or 8% grades in the other areas of So. Cal.

Oh jeez, nail my tiny feet to the floor!  I just didn't want to get into
an argument about steep streets in SF.

OK, that's the Los Padres NF. Mighty good dirt motorcycle riding there.
From LA, head north on 5 and turn left at Gorman.

Urban renewal.  I liked it the way it was before.

OK OK OK OK OK!  We have hills.  We even have mountains.  I just got tired of
talking about it.  At any rate, we certainly don't have anything to compare
with Lombard Street.

I agree with that totally.  =)

15% is the steepest grade I've seen in SoCal, on Texas Street in San
Diego.  There's a few streets that may be steeper on Banker's Hill, but
I don't think anything comes close to 30%.

It is Filbert Street, coming east off of Hyde.  It's got a 31.5 degree
slope.  It is one or two blocks south of Lombard.

That clearly wasn't what was meant.

"What's" is a contraction of "What is."  So what Steve really
meant was "What is the criteria...?"  If he meant more than
one, he'd have written, "What *are* the criteria...?"
