Clarion system in a boat

I installed a Clarion system, radio, cd changer amp, remote, 2 sets of speakers
in a friends (?) boat and he says I screwed it up.  Supposedly now the
batteries go dead.  Amp and radio power go directly to the batteries and is
properly fused.  I know the yellow backup power wire always goes to a constant
on power source but can the red power wire go there also, does it need to be
switched?  The system works fine, no blown fuses or cooked wires.  He has
electrical problems elsewhere in the boat and he says these were caused by the
stereo being improperly installed, the only place I tied into the existing boat
wiring was at the batteries.  Can't be, right?  Also he says the amp is
constantly drawing power because there's a spark at the batteries when he
reconnected the power wire while the unit was off, is it just capacitors
charging up?

Thanks, K Mo

If the red wire is getting power, the radio is always on unless he manually
turns it off
