Inverter - what's that???

I've quite old Sony cassete player.. with 2 pre amp outputs, 2 FM inputs and
some "inverter"... on it it's only written - do not touh me or I'll cause a
malufction ;)

but serious - what the hell is that thing? is it really needed?  I've rather
small amount of space in the back of the unit...

That's exactly what I'm missing... It gives your LCD backlight... and m
doesn't have it, so I don't see much in dark... :( BTW: Has someone go
any schemes for it
