Thanks. I assume that you mean open is normal state, gnd is attenuated? Is
this true for all newer head units? This particular head unit is a Sony
CDX-MP80.
I should also state that this was brought up when looking for a solution
for an aftermarket GPS/navigation unit to allow you to better hear the
voice prompts for navigation.

Is it typically not reliable? If so, is the reliability usually an issue
with the head unit, the cell phone, or perhaps it's typically a third
party/interface problem?

Consult the manufacturers literature. I know pioneer gives you the
choice of attenuation or full mute on their cell phone mute wires.
However, the PITA I spoke of is that typically you have to manually
un-mute/unatt it.
