DIY problem: Front speakers not working

I just purchased a Kenwood MPV622 player for my '88 RX-7 to replace
the MPV619 I had stolen a couple of months ago. When I hook the new
unit up, everything works except the front speakers. No sound at all
from them. I have no amp or disc changer or anything fancy - just a
straight connect to the factory speakers. I've double-checked the
connections and they appear to be good.

One thing that is puzzling, though: the place that installed the last
stereo (Ultimate Electronics) cut the four-pin connector for the front
speakers, and left the others alone. I assumed this was done to make
room, but now I wonder if there was something else there that the
thieves took along with the unit. I've got everything else hooked up
through a harness conversion kit except the fronts, which are
connected via butt connectors. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The front speakers in an 88 RX-7 are usually amplified. You can check
this by using a phillips head to take the dash panels housing the
speakers down. You'll likely find that there is a pod on the right side.

I want to say that you need to hook the amp remote output of your deck
to the amp turn on, but based on the part I edited out you should check
to see if they ran new wires from the front speakers.

It doesn't look like they did. I should have added in my original post
that after UE cut the front speaker socket, they stripped the four
wires, which leads me to believe they attached something to them.
Could there have been an attachment that connected the remote output
of the unit to these wires? Thanks again.

My memory is kinda fuzzy here (did too much LDS in my younger days), but
I believe the standard Mazda harness didn't work for the RX-7's, so not
knowing better they may have hacked it, wired it up, then realized it
didn't work, and found the amp and rewired from the plug at the amp. If
that were the case, though, then hooking those wires up should have
solved the problem.

Really, after all this it'd probably be easier for you to grab 6 ft of
speaker wire and just run it straight to the speakers. Be warned that
the passengers side speaker is inside the amp pod, so you'll need to
open that up to connect the speaker.

Now would be a good time to consider new indash speakers.

No, but I did one. The best thing about mormons is that you don't have
to have just one.
