First time poster here:

I don't want to spend a lot of money but would like a CD player with
decent speakers.  Any ideas?

The two are incompatible. You ever hear the maxim "you only get what you
pay for"? I'd say for a decent (not great, but not sh.t either) CD
player and two you should be prepared to spend about $200 + tax and install.

I have a 1988 CrX HF, it came with some crappy tape deck. Although my setup
may be "ghetto" its better than the original and is louder.
The deck is a 99$ Jenson from walmat (whos going to steal that??) it has 4
speaker output and two rca plugs for an amp.
I used some small 2 chan amp I got at walmart (50x2) and hooked that up
using spaker level in.(it fights in right behind the middle thing and sits
on the hump) That drives the front door speakers, which are 6.5 inches. The
speakers are some okay quailty ones I had laying around. when I installed
them, the OEM speakers are flat as hell, when I put the other speakers in
which have a pudgier magnet, I had to cout the backs off of the baskets that
mount to the door sheetmetal, that hold the speaker, youll see what I mean.
I use the head unit to power the side hatch speakers which are also 6.5
inches, with these tho, you have a metal "box" thing that the speaker
attaches to, the OEM speakers kind of have weird mounting holes, the speaker
mount to the car with metal machine bolts. you can get some JDM "bass tubes"
if youre all for the JDM, they are basically just some molded plastic tube
looking thing that fits up into that void behind the speaker for better
sound quailty...oslt
I have a 15" sub in this bigass box that takes up the space where the
original "cargo trunk" is/used to be, my crx didnt come with one. (they fall
apart much like the lid to the little tray dealie behind the seats) In that
tray partition thing is where I have my amp at along with a cap that I just
added. that tray thing comes out real easily with just a few screws holding
it, grounding point right under the plastic. In the little useless side
pockets is where Ill have a power distrubition block/fuse.
Well thats what Ive done, tired of the tiny little nothingness that came
with the car.got a lil more bump in the trunk.
When I have a job and some money and stuff, Im going to ditch that big
floppy fifteen, and just do a ten inch trio with some added power.
btw for the power cable..there is already a hole on the fire wall about ..eh
1/2 to  3/4 of an inch with a rubber stopper in it, it is kind of under the
fuel filter if you look hard enough you'll find it, just poke a straightened
out coat hanger thru it and then find it on the inside of the car..its kinda
up there.
well good luck with your endevors
