You may remember a week ago or so I posted a pic of the inside of a
Radio Shack amp I bought.  You could tell it was almost worthless.

Here is a pic of the inside of my new Lightning Audio amp, for those
who are interested in such things.

Looks much better, I think.  The pic of the Optimus amp is still at:

I'm not interested in owing an Optimus amplifier (although I used to when I
was a teenager working at Radio Shack), but I am curious to know what
relevance the inside of an amplifer LOOKS like in relation to its sound.

My thoughts exactly, this guy keeps posting pictures of the inside of amps,
maybe he should go hook them up and listen to them.

Well I think you can tell a lot.  From the pic of the optimus amp you
can tell that it's basically the same type of amp that is in a head
unit.  So it is basically worthless if your headunit has speaker
outputs.  Also someone posted this URL in a reply to that thread
http://arawndark.netfirms.com/AMP450/index.htm, showing the internals
of that amp only taking up a little more than half of the size of the
actual case (deception my the manufacturer).

Also I've read in this group that people have opened up amplifiers and
found sheets of lead put in there to make the amp heavier, implying a
more quality unit.

Also you can see the size of the power supply components, and how well
the transistors are heat sinked (lacking in either of these areas are
indications that amp is probably overrated in power).

I've also read, in this group, people taking their amps apart and
seeing poor construction, with solder joints that are coming a part,
etc.

So to answer your question, I think you can tell a lot by looking at
the inside of the amp.

Actually by opening up the optimus amp I was able to tell that it was
not even worth hooking up, it would probably sound the same or worse
than my head unit.  I will definately be hooking up the lightning
audio amplifier.

I especially wanted to post a pic of the L.A. amp because many people
are interested in this brand of amplifiers, but there is not a lot of
info out there for people trying to find out if they are good or not.
So there's a pic, see for yourself.  The board takes up the whole
case, the amp uses real transistors (not ICs like the optimus), it is
well heat sinked, and there a no fake weights in it.

And after I get it hooked up I plan to post again with my impressions
about how it sounds, if it thumps when it turns on and off (I
understand this can vary by installation), etc.

And just another FYI, the Optimus claims to be 25 watts a channel, it
has a 7.5 amp fuse.  The Lighting Audio claims to be 50 watts a
channel, it has a 25 amp fuse.

Nothing really IMHO... but it can be used to determine which amps share
the same PC board.  for example  Lanzar 1200D = Boss R3000D = Tsunami
1000.1 = Pyramid 2400D.  All 3 amps are internally identical, but are
priced differently, and they have different RMS wattage specs.  I like
the Tsunami the best of them all, its reted the most conservatively
while the Pyramid 2400D has the most heatsink fin surface area and
should in theory dissipate heat better.  Ive seen the tsunami and
pyramid sell for $120 while the Lanzar 1200D is $200 - 250.

You can really save a lot of $$$ with this information.

The 1000 watt mono Clarion APX series amp (the black one) share the same
PCB as a high $$$ Arc audio.

Manufacturers hate it when we find out these kinds things.

Theres a post pics inside your amps thread on termpro for those who care.

So are you saying... that there is a pyrmiad amp that is "good"  ???

What about brands like  THUMP and PYLE and MOBILE AUTHORITY

are they identical to any "good" brands?  Because there is a
luquidation store here that sells them for DIRT DIRT DIRT cheap.

Yes that 2400D is a solid amp.  A kid across the street has one in a
chevy corvair with a pair of RE 12s... dam that thing is LOUD!!!

Generally I am a pyramid basher too, and wouldn't be caught dead with
one of their amps in my car.  But at the same time I can regognize a
solid piece of gear, and I'm saying this is a solid amp for the $$$
IMHO.   He got it used on ebay for $125.

Sorry I have no first hand experience with thoese other brands.
