Well I think you can tell a lot. From the pic of the optimus amp you
can tell that it's basically the same type of amp that is in a head
unit. So it is basically worthless if your headunit has speaker
outputs. Also someone posted this URL in a reply to that thread
http://arawndark.netfirms.com/AMP450/index.htm, showing the internals
of that amp only taking up a little more than half of the size of the
actual case (deception my the manufacturer).
Also I've read in this group that people have opened up amplifiers and
found sheets of lead put in there to make the amp heavier, implying a
more quality unit.
Also you can see the size of the power supply components, and how well
the transistors are heat sinked (lacking in either of these areas are
indications that amp is probably overrated in power).
I've also read, in this group, people taking their amps apart and
seeing poor construction, with solder joints that are coming a part,
etc.
So to answer your question, I think you can tell a lot by looking at
the inside of the amp.

Actually by opening up the optimus amp I was able to tell that it was
not even worth hooking up, it would probably sound the same or worse
than my head unit. I will definately be hooking up the lightning
audio amplifier.
I especially wanted to post a pic of the L.A. amp because many people
are interested in this brand of amplifiers, but there is not a lot of
info out there for people trying to find out if they are good or not.
So there's a pic, see for yourself. The board takes up the whole
case, the amp uses real transistors (not ICs like the optimus), it is
well heat sinked, and there a no fake weights in it.
And after I get it hooked up I plan to post again with my impressions
about how it sounds, if it thumps when it turns on and off (I
understand this can vary by installation), etc.
And just another FYI, the Optimus claims to be 25 watts a channel, it
has a 7.5 amp fuse. The Lighting Audio claims to be 50 watts a
channel, it has a 25 amp fuse.
