This is just a stab in the dark, not knowing which particular model of
Clarion receiver you have, but some receivers can be interfaced with a
cellular telephone hands-free kit, and will automatically mute
themselves when an incoming call is received.  Perhaps there's a wire
in your harness that's shorted to ground, making the deck believe
there's an incoming call and muting itself?
