Hi Folks,

I'm doing some serious upgrading to the sound system in my volvo.  I
have purchase and will be installing a Pioneer DVH-P5000MP and a
Soundstream D'Artagnan.  Later I might put in a Alpine PXA-H701 for
the equilization, time correction, and to see how Dolby Pro-Logic II
sounds in a car.

My next challenge is deciding on speakers.  I was thinking of going
for Diamond Audio Hex S500, especially since they only have a mounting
depth of 1-7/8" and the Volvo has a max depth of 2".

But, my main challenge is what to do for subs. I was hoping to get
some advice on what size and type of subwoofer that I reasonably
install?  The problem with the volvo is that there is a solid metal
backing behind the rear seat. The only way that sound could get from
the trunk would be throught the two unused 6x9 speaker holes in the
back.   I could use dual 8", but how good would the base be.  I was
thinking of slightly increasing the size of the opening and use dual
10" in seal boxes direct firing through the opening.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Two 10s in sealed boxes firing through the openings would sound great.  You
could also go infinite baffle and use the rear shelf to mount the woofers
to, if that's possible.  Also keep in mind that even though the area behind
the seat is metal, the bass will still pass through it into the passenger
compartment.  But if it's possible, venting the woofers directly into the
compartment would be more desirable.
