...I have a Sony MDX-C6500X (MD head unit) that I snagged off eBay,
and I want to install it in my '96 Contour GL.  Problem is, I didn't
get anything other than the receiver itself, the manuals, and the
wiring harness it came with...so, being an install virgin, I'm left
wondering

a. if I need the "sleeve" it originally came with to install it in
 this particular car, and
b. how complicated the whole wiring harness issue is/can be--to the
best of my knowledge, the car doesn't have Premium Sound anything
installed, but I'll have to pop the factory tape deck out to be
 absolutely sure of that.

Yeh, that sleave can be pretty important, but I think there may be other ways
of installing without the sleave.  Pick yourself up a installation kit for your
vehicle, you may be able to find them at Wal-Mart, or a local car audio store.
While you are there, get the harness adapter for your car, if you are going to
use the factory wiring.  Now, I don't know about premium sound systems, though,
but the above works for a lot of cars.

A '96 Contour doesn't need an installation kit, so he'll either need the
mounting sleeve or find some other way of keeping the deck secure in the
dash opening.

Using a wire harness is a good idea.  If the Contour doesn't have premium
sound, the standard Ford harness will work fine.  If it does have premium
sound, the power/ground part of the harness can be used, and the speaker
wiring can be connected directly to the speaker outputs at the factory
amplifier.  In a Contour with a premium sound system, the factory amp can be
found right behind the glove box.
