I have a 2000 XLT with the 4-door extended cab
and a no-name CD receiver. I listen to a lot of
jazz/R&B and the stock system, while adequate,
just does not cut it any more. I had pretty much
taken it for granted that I would have to
replace the head unit to get a decent sound, but
according to my old man, the stock unit is a
Philco and ought to be pretty decent. I have
looked high and low on the Internet, but I
cannot find the stats on the stock head unit for
my Ranger.
All I have been able to find out is that the
stock speakers (there are four, one in each
door) are 25 watts apiece... but how much power
is the amp putting out? Does it have a preamp
(doubtful), in the eventuality of my putting a
modest-sized woofer and amp in the back? Is an
aftermarket preamp available for it?
Inquiring minds want to know! (Especially if
it'll save me $100+....)

you can get a decent quality cd player with high power output for less than
$150. then, you can upgrade at least the front speakers to something better
and have the preamp outputs on the deck to run to an amp for your sub.
