They're not that bad. They do kill some of your frequency response.
Depending on the bit rate of which your MP3's are encoded, it could make a
big difference, or none at all.
They do have a little impact, but not as severe as some say. But, I guess
true audiophiles wouldn't be caught with MP3's anyway...

The cassette ones aren't too bad. It may or may not please you, but they are
cheap. You might want to consider a MP3 head unit, but weigh the costs and see
which one works best for you.

IME, FM transmitters are superior to casette adapters. The FM transmitters
that are wired directly to your antenna lead should provide a near-perfect
interface.
