Anyone know of any software that may have a link to freedb.org or gracenote
to automatically generate ID3 tags by looking at the filename?
Specifically, I'm after something that will not only write the Song name and
Artist, but also the Album name, track number, and perhaps year.

Windows Media Player will fill in missing ID3 tag info for you. It must be
enabled in "options" under the Media Library tab. You have the option to only
fill in missing info or to overwrite the current tag.

What database does it get the information from?

Probably CDDB. I don't think Media Player lists it's source.

I use a program called ID3-TagIt which will connect to the CDDB database and
pull the names and info off. The cool thing about it is you get to choose
from the list in CDDB that it finds instead of it chosing for you. It will
also fill in Genre, Year, and whatever else info you want. Best program I
have used for this application.

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

i just tried it, it seems decent if you have a small number of cds, but i
couldnt find a way to tag a parent directory with multiple cds under it and
have it just do them all in batch. i had to do it one cd at a time and
manually select a matching result. very tedious if you have hundreds of cds
worth of mp3s.

Excellent point - I'm about to embark on the same road and hadn't thought
of that yet...I hope someone out there has a known solution for us!

In ID3-TagIT click Options then Scan Subdirectories.

That only seems to bring up files that already have ID3 tags. Also when I
tried to select an album that was missing one song, it couldn't identify it
in the database. I don't always mp3 up every song on a CD, so that's
another shortcoming. It did fine if I used the entire album.
