I am trying to replace the factory speakers in my 2001 nissan pathfinder and
when I look up the speaker size it gives me 6.5" on some sites and 6 3/4 on
other. Some sites even have both. Will both actually fit or is it just
certain brands? Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

I'm having this same problem with me dodge dakota.  They are different, some
websites sell an adapter to fit 6.5" speakers in to the stock location.

6.5 will fit, but aftermarket speakers are usually coaxial and four ohms.
Nissan doesn't use four ohm speakers. P.
