Woofer box question, rear facing ports?

After 2 yrs hiatus (brain surgery) I can now operate power tools and want to
build a box for my 2 12" Rockford DVC subs.

Right now they're in store-bought sealed 1.25 cubic foot boxes; I'm building
2 cubic foot ported.

I noticed, in playing around with positioning the store bought boxes, that
rear facing subs yield deeper bass, but forward facing subs have a more
'connected' sound to the rest of the system.

Hard to explain, it's just that bass drum pedal hits sound more in sync with
everything when the woofs face forward.  Reversing polarity on rear facing
woofs helps a bit, but not entirely.

Anyway, my question.  Why can't I build a box with forward facing woofers,
and ports facing rearward.  Seems that it might have the best of both
worlds; many home speakers have this design, so why not in a car?

Your help in this is much appreciated,
Rich

I asked a similiar question to JL audio and I was told that I should treat
the ports as they are the speaker. I do Agree with the reason being that
facing it to the rear cuts down some of the unwanted turbulance and other
noises produced by ports or vents.
