I recently purchased a 1998 Ford Explorer - Eddie Bauer Edition and
would like to replace the radio in it.  As I understand it, some
Explorers have external amps - which need to be handled differently.
How can I tell if this Explorer has the external amp?

Thanks in advance,

do you have a sub on the passenger side rear wall. If so there is an amp
there. 95 watts @ 6ohms I believe. Might be more.

I believe the 98 Explorers are ok and an aftermarket deck can utilize the
factory amp still; it was the 96-97 Eddie Bauer editions with the JBL sound
system where the problem was.  An easy way to find out, is if there is an
antenna plugged into the back of the factory stereo.  If there is, just buy
a wire harness and install the aftermarket deck.  If there is no antenna
plugged in the back, then you would have to by-pass the factory amp, which
is located in the rear passenger side quarter panel.

Actually
if you have the Stock JBL system
you can still use an aftermarket deck
although the adapter harness is 40+ since you must run wires from the back
of the car to the front...but it can be done
if you want more info let me know
i have a 95 XLT with the JBL setup i might be able to answer a few more
questions

Being that it's aEB version I do Believe it does have the ext. amp. Al
I did to bypass the one I worked on was to run new speaker wire. I
wasn't as hard/tough as I thought it would be. If I remember, the am
is on the driver side in the cargo area behind the panneling
