Does detachable face's deter cd player theft?

henree64@hotmail.com - 24 Feb 2005 17:51 GMT My cd player was stolen recently. And I usually leave the face off in the glove compartment. Of course the one time I leave it off it is stolen. Does it really help to keep the face off of the cd player? What are ways I can stop this from happening again? Are there any brands that are stolen more than others? I had a pioneer cd player. 99.99 My harness was damaged and a dew plugs are cracked. Toyota wants me to replace the whole dash and harness. They say they can't sell the plugs alone. Are they being dramatic. The harness will cost 1200.00 dollars. There has to be a cheaper way to fix or replace the plugs. I probably could splice them in my self...
bobb - 24 Feb 2005 18:19 GMT >Does it really help to keep the face off of the cd player? A bit fat NO. There is a store that sell nothing but faceplates!

ephedralover@hotmail.com - 24 Feb 2005 19:01 GMT The only thing a faceplate does is make it a little harder for the crack head to unload the unit quickly and makes him guess what kind of unit is there. It may not help at all, but its better than a nice shiny eclipse face that a crack head doesn't know won't work when yanked out.
mfreak1171@yahoo.com - 24 Feb 2005 21:57 GMT I had 2 complete systems stolen, EQ, amps, subs, everything gone. EXCEPT the deck, cuz the faceplate wasn't in the car.. If it was I'm sure that woulda been gone too.
bobb - 25 Feb 2005 01:49 GMT >I had 2 complete systems stolen, EQ, amps, subs, everything gone. >EXCEPT the deck, cuz the faceplate wasn't in the car.. If it was I'm >sure that woulda been gone too. What an extrapolation!
Maybe you had so much goodies they just ran out of time, and getting under your console wasn't worth it. Think of that.
mfreak1171@yahoo.com - 25 Feb 2005 20:00 GMT Ya, I suppose that could be.. In the last 15 years, I've had 2 non-detachable face HU's, one stolen and the other attempted stolen. (I had no amps/subs/anything else in the car at the time) And I've had 2 breakins where my detachable face HU (with the face not in the HU) was the only thing left behind. I've always felt the main reason i still had it was cuz the face wasn't on it. I think detachable faces deter quite a bit, if I'm wrong, then I'm content being delusional about it.
Tony F - 25 Feb 2005 03:00 GMT "Does it really help to keep the face off of the cd player?"
Yes, it absolutely helps. Will it keep it from getting it stolen? No. But all other things being equal a thief will be MORE tempted to steal a deck with the faceplate on vs. off. Problem is that most people take the faceplate off and hide it under the seat, in the glove box, etc. Theives know this.

The reason is, the thief can't know *for certain* that the faceplate is in the glove box or under the seat unless he commits himself to breaking into your car. Right there, that makes your car a less-inviting target than someone else's car that has the faceplate still stuck on the head unit.

Wasn't that what I just said?

I have had four COMPLETE systems stolen and numerous other break-ins where the HU, CD's, an amp or two, etc. was taken.
Here are two things I have learned from it all:
I have NEVER had a car broken into when a red flashing alarm light was blinking (twice I forgot to activate my alarm and WHAM, gone).
No one has ever tried to remove my HU when the face plate was not on. However, once a thief took my faceplate and left the rest of it (I still have it, a Kenwood).
Also, look into video survielence at your home. The cost of cameras is dirt cheap (you can get a small color camera at Fry's Electronics here in Seattle for $20). I have a camera trained on my car and an LCD monitor at my bedside. Believe me, I sleep much better and the camera acts as a deterent.
Of course, the best advice is to try to always park in well lit places, keep valuables and stereo gear as hidden as possible, and (this is the hard one) don't go around blasting the bass as this is a sure sign of amps and subwoofers.

Well base on my simply logic, I had to spend $100. My stereo is a cheap one so not interested by the thief but the sound is damn good.
henree64@hotmail.com - 25 Feb 2005 08:01 GMT My car is pretty old, no power locks or power windows. Are there anythings I can buy that blinks on the dash. That will fool a potential thief into thinking I have an alarm?

I believe Radio Shack sells a small dash-mounted LED that will blink whenever the ignition is off.

Then, it will at least make sense to SOMEONE, and the rest of us can probably find an online translator that would spit out better English than he can.

I used to ignore moron like you. "Installing 20 buck stereo ain't no man enough???" is not a properly constructed sentence, and I have no idea what you meant by it. Incidentally, neither is "I used to ignore moron like you."

Did you get some help with that post, mmdir2002? Now be honest.

No, I think your best bet is to plug your words in your native language into a translation engine online, and then simply copy and paste the English version so that we may understand what you're saying.

I never wrote that. Which is worse? Your English, your advice, or your inability to quote?

That will fool a potential > thief into thinking I have an alarm? Radio Shack sells a blinking red light that looks just like an alarm. It's really cheap (like $5 or something). If installed right, it is very convincing. Also, go to your local car stereo store, often they have unused alarm warning stickers lying around that they might be willing to give you, and then put those on your car for added deterence value.
