Since you're not concerned with HDTV, and 32" is a fairly common size
for CRT (tube) televisions, that's probably your best best, both for
picture quality and cost.
Any of the models that use the Sony "Trinitron" tube would be a good
choice, especially any of the Sony "Wega" models. CRT technology for
TV's is pretty mature, so there are a lot of choices under $300, and
you'd probably be happy with any of them. If you can, try to find a
model with a screen that's flat in both the horizontal and vertical
dimension, since that will help cut down on glare a LOT.

One place I check is the reviews section of zdnet.com and/or
cnet.com... several ways to search (size, brand, cost, editor's
choice, etc). Tells you how they rated it, it's good and bad points,
and the prices available through various vendors. You can also compare
models side by side. Same as they do for most any electronics,
computers, etc.

Where were you looking that led you to believe that you'd have to
spend at least $435 for a 32" TV? Was it the same place that wanted
to charge you $85 for the Clarion EQ? You might want to start
shopping at some different stores.
As I've already pointed out, you have plenty of choices for non-HD 32"
TV sets (which is what you wanted) in the under-$300 range.
Even Sears has three 32" models under your $435 "minimum", and they
hardly ever have the best prices. Best Buy has six or seven models
under $435, several of which are 34" or 35". Some of them are even
wide-screen and HD-ready.

I see. Check out some of the local stores as well. A lot of those
"overstock/discontinued/factory outlet" places don't really have very
good prices at all. You could probably do better than overstock.com
by walking into the local Circuit City or Best Buy.
