Actually my question should be "in-glass heating element antenna" vs
whip antenna....
I just had a Pioneer head unit installed in my BMW. The previous stock
"Business CD" unit used a diversity antenna system of two (maybe three)
sections of the heating element in the back glass. I feel like the
Pioneer has a more sensitive tuner, but because it's only able to use
one section of the antenna, my radio reception is actually worse at
times.
Do any of you think it would be worth it to install some kind of whip?
Or do you think the in-glass antenna is just as good?
Just wondering which you guys think is better, in general. Thanks!

Usually you get better reception with and external antenna. In-glass
antenna's will have bad spots depending on the direction your driving.

Thanks...
Even though it'll be a little bit of a hassle, I'm going to try
installing a whip.
Anyone else have any opinions on this? :)

Two things to check.
First you need to make sure the antenna amp in the back is receivin
remote power. If it isn't the amp will not be on and the receptio
will be quite poor - remote power is fed via a white wire on the dec
and/or antamp harness.
Second, which antenna cable are you using at the deck? You need to us
the one with the larger connector and adapt it to the standard Motorol
connector. The smaller one is part of the diversity setup and will no
work properly with a standard tuner.
BTW, reception will be somewhat diminished no matter what you do. Th
only way to make it better is to replace the antenna amplifier modul
with a newer single-out unit (about 2002 or newer for an E46), but thi
is a costly move. Check the above points first.
