2004 Nissan Quest stock unit. CD's sound great, but FM sounds horrible and
always has. The "ST" stereo indicator is displayed but it is most obviously
in mono. I rarely if ever listen to the radio, but I am thinking of buying
an FM transmitter for my iPod. I suspect it will sound pretty bad. Other
than upgrading the stereo is there any way to fix this?

If you suspect that something is wrong with your radio I would try taking it
back to the dealer. A 2004, I would think, would still be under warranty.
Even if you are unsure, it would cost you nothing just to check it out.
If it is working fine, that does not necessarily mean that an FM transmitter
(for your iPod) would sound bad. It's possible that your radio simply has
VERY poor reception (believe me, I've had radios like that). FM
transmitters plug right in to your antenna so you are guaranteed EXCELLENT
reception.
You may want to give it a try. Most reputable car audio dealers will let
you return items if they don't work out.
MOSFET
I agree with what MOSFET said, but before I take it to the dealer (which
might turn out to be a lengthy process) I would try finding a Nissan forum
to see if other Quest owners have similar complaints. That is, maybe the
stock system's radio just sucks a.s in all Quests, as opposed to maybe just
a defective unit. Just an idea.

There is a Nissan service bulletin (NTB04-087) addressing this problem, but
for a Quest SL w/ nav. My SL does not have nav. Also the stereo is a
Panasonic with 6-CD changer. I think mine is a Clarion, one CD. I
mentioned it to the dealer and he said that's just the way it is (which I
seriously doubt). There is a huge difference in sound quality between CD
and FM. The FM literally sounds like AM...
