protect light turns on when volume goes too high??

I have never had trouble with this before but when i turn up the
volume past like 5 the subs stop playing and the amps red protect
light turns on??? what could this be???

What resistance do you have the sub wired to?  More importantly, is
that resistance below what your amp is rated for?
