I did some research on this myself and you are absolutely correct, on
first glance, it appears that the more expensive speakers have a more
limited frequency response.

 However, that being said, those numbers mean little to me, and they should
mean little to you as well.  First of all, the given spec.:

  frequency response: 60-27,000 Hz

 is incomplete.  It's a little like saying your car will do 0 to 60,
period.  Without the time spec., this information is useless.  The same goes
for that frequency response spec.  At what distance is the microphone placed
from the speaker when the test is conducted?  How many watts were used
during the test?  What decibel range did that encompass?  BEYOND THAT, there
are a thousand ways manufactures can manipulate test conditions to produce
the desired results.

 A more meaningful spec. would be 60Hz to 25kHz measured at 1 meter/1 watt,
+/-6 dB (this means that between the top number and the bottom number there
are places where it may be 6 dB louder or 6 dB quiter than the reference
volume, these places tend to be on the ends of the given audio spectrum).
THIS, to me, would be a more meaningful spec.

 I guess what I'm trying to say is without the FULL STORY, don't worry too
much about those numbers.  It's possible that Alpine more strictly and
rigorously tests it's higher end models.  That might explain the
discrepency.

 I know that seems strange and confusing to an average consumer, but that
may be the case here as I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT THE S SERIES 6X9 CAN PLAY AN
ENTIRE OCTIVE LOWER THAN THE R SERIES 6X9. No way.

 Again, be careful about reading too much into a manufacture's given specs.
These specs often have more to do with marketing concerns than real
performance parameters (TRUST me on this one).  Use your ears and your own
music, they are the best tools for evaluation.
