Was the family in a car? If so, what kind? It sounds like the 17 yr
old ran a red light and smacked into them. i wonder what was going
thru his head.

No, they were pedestrians in a crosswalk.

Or a purse or an arm, maybe. Would be really poetic if a set of car keys
was in the hand of that arm.... :)

"Whatever the reason"?
A little harsh, given your ignorance of what happened, aren't you?

I don't know about anyone else, but I grow tired of seeing these stories
of people killed and seriously injured with 'no charges filed' when irl,
for much more minor stuff cops write tickets as they feel like. There are
two options here.
1) there is an investigation, and if so why does someone need to be
killed before cops 'investigate' rather than just write tickets with a
collision?
2) There are no charges/tickets. If so, why is killing someone 'just an
accident' not worthy of anything more but heaven forbid we drive 80mph on
an empty interstate.

No sh.t. Something is seriously wrong when merely driving with the
flow of traffic in a safe, considerate manner and somehow being picked
out by a cop is an automatic $200+ fine, but you can kill people with
impunity.
I realize that this might sound a little Judy-esque, but it really
doesn't make any sense at all.

It does make sense once we look at this from the priorities that best
suit government. Punishing someone who kills people with their vehicle
will cost the state money. Ticketing people who drive normal and
reasonably makes money for government. I am begining to think it really
is that simple.

Exactly. You get a ticket for a harmless offense like 'speeding' on
empty roads but you get scot-free if you kill someone? Goes to show how
absurd traffic law enforcement is in this country

Perhaps it's my lack of imagination, but I can't seem to come up with
any scenario which would justify running down six people in a marked
crosswalk.

I think you said it best right there. There's no excuse or scenario
that makes this okay.

Make that a few decades.
